Sou’wester Arts Week: The Guest Experience
Sou’wester Arts Week is both an artist residency and a public exhibition, held once a year on the Washington coast at the Sou’wester Lodge. From Sunday through Thursday, over 40 artists are on-site in residency, living and working across the grounds as they develop new work in real time. From Friday through Sunday, the doors open to the public, inviting guests to experience performances, installations, and open studios across the property.
Arts Week’s public portion is an immersive, living gallery spread across the grounds and nearby venues. Art is woven throughout lodge suites, trailers, and cabins, as well as into the surrounding woods and along the beach. Installations are often interactive, performances take place throughout the day, and open studios invite you directly into the working environments of individual artists, where you can encounter both finished pieces and works still in process. There is no single path through Arts Week. You move at your own pace, choosing what to enter, what to linger with, and what to return to.

What makes Arts Week unique as a guest is this closeness to process. You are not only viewing finished work, but encountering the conditions it was made in. You see scale, materials, experimentation, and decision-making still visible in the work itself. You also have the opportunity to meet artists directly, ask questions, and hear how their projects evolved over the course of the week.
Arts Week is open to everyone, whether you are deeply engaged in the arts or simply curious about how creative work comes into being. It offers a rare opportunity to experience art not as something separate or distant, but as something embedded in place, time, and human process.
What stays with many guests is not just the work itself, but the feeling of having witnessed it as it was made. A sense of closeness to process. A new understanding of how ideas become form. And a reminder that art is something alive, shaped moment by moment by the people making it.
