Recent Master of Art graduate from Notre Dame and new studio manager at Ilwaco Artworks, Hans Miles will share details and stories of his 15 years in the ceramic field- from explorations in salt fired pottery, time leading an art residency program at a ceramic sewer pipe factory and his move into monumental sculpture. Hans has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, and was the recent recipient of the annual purchase award at the Midwest Museum of American Art. His exhibition “Dyer 15” will be on display at Ilwaco Artworks art gallery from September 14th – October 31st.

Clay Play is a casual, beginner-friendly session where you can learn handbuilding skills to create a finished piece! Ages 10+ w/an adult or ages 14+. $35/person. Register for any four Clay Plays for $100.

Monday 9/16 and Monday 9/23: 2-Week Beginner Wheel Throwing | 4:30pm-7:30pm at Ilwaco Artworks Community Clay Studio – 109 1st Ave N Ilwaco, WA
For the beginning or intermediate pottery enthusiast! (Folks with previous wheel experience welcome). Class includes the preparation of clay, the techniques of centering and throwing, texturing, trimming and glazing your work. Fee includes clay, glazing and firing.
Wheel Throwing 3-Week Series w/Hans Miles.
9/5 through 9/19, 5:30-7:30p. Ages 10-14 w/an adult or 14+.
This class will begin with the basics of throwing pottery on the wheel and guide learners towards their choice of one of three final projects: cups, bowls, or planters. The first session will cover the fundamental mechanics and process of throwing. The second session will focus on the nuances of form and technique for your specific project, while the third session will be dedicated to refining your work.
ALL THINGS GLAZE WORKSHOP
9/20, 5:30-7:30p. $50.
10/13, 2pm-5pm. $50
BYOP (Bring your own pottery). In this class you will be working on bisqued pottery to learn about all things glaze related. You will learn about underglaze, mineral washes, kiln processes and glaze chemistry as well as many different application methods.

Introduction to Hand Brooms workshop with visiting artist, Sarah Benson at The Sou’wester Lodge Pavilion, 2-6p. For ages 16+. $60/person.

Learn to weave your own turkey wing and hawk’s tail hand broom in this introductory, hands-on class. We will discuss the tools, materials, and techniques for crafting beautiful and functional brooms that will have you sweeping out the corners in style. Open to all beginners. Please be aware that broom making is a physical task and moderate hand strength is recommended.
Sarah Benson is the founder and face behind Sun Bunny Studio based in Seattle, Washington. She has a background in fiber arts and began weaving brooms in earnest while homesteading in the San Juan Islands. When not crafting, she works at a local non-profit working on housing and food insecurity.
