Each March The Sou’wester is given over to 30+ artists and art collectives for a week of residency work culminating in a public exhibition of performances, installations & studio tours. Arts Week highlights the creative process and experiential nature of the Sou’wester Artist Residency Program. Arts week 2024 hopes to create communal movement from the confluence of individual flow states. Through each of our visions, we come together to share in making something bigger. How does this energized space wash back on us? How does it inspire us, heal us, move us towards a sense of belonging? What do we take back from this exchange to seed our own revisioning?

In this workshop, students will explore the “nerikomi” technique of pressing or folding multiple colors of clay to achieve unique surface designs. Students will learn the basics of hand-building with clay while creating plates and platters for any purpose. This class is beginner-friendly and includes all the tools you need, clay, glaze, and firing of two or three finished pieces.
Ally Bruser is an elementary school art teacher, artist, and mother living in southwest Washington, on the unceded territory of the Chinook Nation. Most of her ceramics are handbuilt using Nerikomi techniques — the process of pressing and folding multiple colors of clay together and then rolling them into slabs. When not making pottery, Ally is working towards making the arts and arts learning experiences more accessible as the Program Manager for Sou’wester Arts. Wheel Throwing Fundamentals (getting centered) and hand building exploration. During the two week course we will be developing beginner skills and techniques for wheel thrown ceramics. This course is designed so give each student 1:1 time to learn how to wheel throw. Between individual wheel throwing sessions with the instructor student will be creating hand built objects and are encouraged explore the properties of clay as a medium. Students will likely bring home 1-2 cylindrical objects and a variety of hand built items.

BIO – Kaitlyn Nelson is a multi-disciplinary Artist and Educator. She has a vibrant studio practice working in hybrid media creating surrealism and storytelling infused with a passion for technical craft. Her creative works amount in a wide breath of material forms as: soft sculpture- mask and costumes, theatrical production, object design, fine art paintings and illustrative book arts. Kaitlyn is originally from Portland, OR where she received a BFA in illustration and Communication Design at PNCA in 2017. She is currently working on a film, “Mistakes Will Be Made” as well as a children’s book / Cumphy synth collaborative album.
