Fall/Winter 2019 Workshop Series

DIY Screen Printing with Contact Paper Stencils with instructor Heather McLaughlin

Saturday Nov 9th noon-4pm
Sunday Nov 10th noon-4pm

Using tape and contact paper artists can create temporary screen printing stencils. This is a great way to make screen at home with little to no chemicals or equipment. In this workshop artists will create successful designs to cut, create the contact paper stencils by hand and pull a small set of prints. In addition to prints on paper, artists can also print on fabric or other flat materials. This workshop is a 2-day class: On Saturday students will participate in a stencil making and printing demo with work time. Sunday the instructor and all the materials will be available so students can complete additional or more complicated projects.

Heather McLaughlin was born next to the Chesapeake Bay in Baltimore Maryland and relocated to Red Lodge Montana, on the north border of Yellowstone Park, in 1991. After Montana, she continued west to Portland Oregon and continued her studies at Pacific Northwest College of Art. Heather completed her Bachelors of Fine Art in Printmaking in 2005. Since 2005 Heather has been teaching printmaking and youth arts classes in PNCA’s Continuing Education Program and a myriad of programs that partner with public schools like SUN and IRCO. Heather has also volunteered as an art instructor at Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls and served as the Director of Flight 64 (a member-run community print studio). In addition to her art, Heather is a musician, studio manger, performer and production assistant.

COST:  $40 plus a $10 materials fee (Please pay material fee directly to the instructor.)

BRING: Please wear clothes that can get messy. Bring an art apron if possible. Students may also bring anything they would like to print onto aside from paper (like t-shirts, handkerchiefs etc.) Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack. Coffee and tea provided.

This workshop is for students age 16+. Age 11 -15 students okay with an adult partner. 12 students max.

MONDEGREEN
are a dream pop / moon-rock band that formed in Portland, Oregon in 2015. The band consists of Ash Dybvig (Theda) on vocals, guitar, and flute with partner Dustin Dybvig (Brass Clouds, Horse Feathers) on drums, keys, and bass. After years of emailed tracks were exchanged across the states from Oregon to Buffalo, New York, the duo met and married in Oregon; forming the project under the initial name Hypnagogic, and then later Mondegreen (meaning: a misinterpretation of a phrase as a result of near-homophony, in a way that gives it a new meaning).

Their debut ‘Returnity’ is an exploration of space, lucidity, peace, mother nature, fractals, and modern-day consciousness. Throughout their futuristic artifact, Ash’s falsetto leads you into a melodic array of cosmic discussions. Accompanying celestial flute lines and bright, warped guitar comes a backbone of Dustin’s lyrical percussion and trip-hop influenced rhythm. Lush strings, deep, bouncy pianos, and mellotron jams are placed cleverly inside this collective psychedelic operetta.

Fall/Winter 2019 Workshop Series

Natural Fiber Dyes with instructor Kate Coulton

The natural world around us has an abundance of color to discover. We will use a variety of plants, including kitchen scraps and local plants, to learn the basics of natural dyeing. Each student will have the opportunity to customize their own unique dye bath to capture the essence of their experience at the Sou’wester. There will also be a walk to learn about plants in the area and their medicinal uses. On Friday night from 7-8pm there is an optional meeting to learn how to prepare the fibers for dyeing. Each student will be able to dye a mini skein of yarn or a silk bandana. *Please specify which you prefer upon registration.

Guided by the wisdom of the natural world and ancestral knowledge, Kate Coulton has forged an inspired career as a medicine maker, plant cultivator, educator, caregiver and artisan. The founder of Pinion Botanicals, Kate is driven by a reverence for the creative and therapeutic potential of all living organisms. Through collaborative projects that involve natural fiber dyeing, herbal remedy crafting, and personal empowerment, she encourages thoughtful interaction with the abundant flora of the Pacific Northwest. Her background in cultural anthropology instilled in her a deep respect for medical pluralism and influenced her current journey of becoming a certified nursing assistant. Gratitude and accessibility are at the core of her practice.

BRING: Please wear clothing that can get dye on and is comfortable to walk in. Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack. Hot tea and coffee provided.

OPTIONAL FRI NIGHT 7-8pm MEET & GREET to learn how to prepare fibers

Tyler Berd sings seasick folk songs across a miniature nylon string guitar. His music is surreal and conversational, direct and rambling. He first scared up regional noise around Boston with the frenetic live performances of his band Bellwire, whom Dig Boston called “quick-witted, wordy, power pop akin to Elvis Costello or early-day Pavement.” He’ll be touring in support of two upcoming singles off his first full-length album out this fall, Tyler Berd and his Deputies.

Floral Bundle Dyeing with Brittany Boles

Floral bundle dyeing layers color the same way you make a delicious meal, thoughtful design, scent, texture, and delicious natural ingredients blend together. We’ll steam our fabric like textile dumplings to create lovely Monet-esque designs. We’ll use flowers grown in my dye garden, spices, extracts, and pigments to ceate beautiful water color effects on natural fabric. You’re invited to bring your own bouquet of dried flowers to immortalize as well. We’ll discuss the world of natural dyes and explore hammered leaf and flower prints (hapazome influences) on paper as well. Price includes a premordanted cotton pillowcase and samples of raw silk noil and bamboo/cotton fabric and a handbook with home instructions.

Fiber artist and indigo grower, Brittany Boles, shares her knowledge of the world of plant colors in workshops along the north coast. She maintains a dye garden at NorthFork 53 Farm in Nehalem, specializing in Japanese Indigo pigment extraction. She’s passionate about collaborating with local artists and connecting with her local native dye plants in her small coastal town of Gearhart.

COST: $60 plus a materials fee of $25 (Please pay material fee directly to instructor.) 

BRING: Notebook, pen, dried flowers (optional), and a bag for transporting damp fibers home. Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack. Coffee and tea provided. Please wear clothes that are ok to get dye on.

This workshop is for students age 10 and up. Max students 12.

Goth-folk musical duo Charming Disaster, based in Brooklyn, NY, performs original storytelling songs inspired by love, death, true crime, ancient mythology, and the occult. Channeling the gothic humor of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton, the noir storytelling of Raymond Chandler, the murder ballads of the Americana tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret, they explore dark narratives and characters with a playful sensibility, combining vocal harmonies and clever lyrics with ukulele, guitar, and virtuosic foot percussion. Their song “Ghost Story” was featured on the hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale, and the duo has toured around the United States, playing bars, clubs, museums, bookstores, and the occasional historic cemetery. Their third album, SPELLS + RITUALS, was released in June 2019 to critical acclaim.

SoulCollage®: Building Your Deck with Josephine Banks

Discover Your Wisdom, Change Your World! SoulCollage® is an intuitive collage process for self-discovery and community. In this workshop we will make our own decks of 5×8 collaged cards for personal use from images found in purchased or donated magazines, calendars, books, cards, personal photos, etc.

Instructor Josephine Banks:
If you were to ask me what I do I would answer this way, “I create, I search, I love, I forgive, I write, I garden, I farm, I teach, I heal, I learn, I share, I march forward, and so much more.” If you were to ask me who I am I would answer this way. “ I am an artist, a healer, a mother, a writer, a wife, a friend, a teacher, a farmer, a student, a volunteer, an explorer, a seeker, a SoulCollage® Facilitator, an Airbnb Super Host and whoever else I need to be.” None of us, not one can be defined simply. It is my belief that because we are undeniably amazing and diverse Creations we all have the power of Creative Energy in us. All capable of great things. All prisms of light.

The traditional Tiffany copper foil method of glass work was my main medium for 18 years or so. Lately I have put that aside finding great joy in other activities. Always having had an interest in what I call the “old time arts” I have taken several of them up over the years such as soap making, sewing, quilting, cooking, husbandry, beading etc. I will always continue to dabble in these arts. In recent years I have grown fond of many mediums. Creating mixed media canvas work is something I love and try to make time for.

Most of my work relates to nature in some way. Being in the forest, on the beach, in the mountains, on the lakes and rivers is pure joy. My soul feels bonded to the moss, the mushrooms, the ever changing forest floor, the horizon where the sea meet the sky oh gosh the entirety of it! I enjoy taking a variety of art classes.Learning about and exploring color and how it affects us is fascinating to me.

Currently I am working on writing my life story. No deadline on that. After 50 years in this lifetime it came to light that my dad was not my father. After some awesome visits with my therapist and an extensive search my bio family was born. There are no coincidences. My intention in putting it all down on paper is to have my children know and understand who I am so they can better understand themselves and the parts of the journey we are on together.

Finding forgiveness and a deeper understanding of my walk this lifetime has given me an amazing sense of freedom. We all have our story, our walk, our journey and so much to learn within that time. To deny the learning and awareness is an insult to time. During the time my husband and I were searching for my family I was introduced to SoulCollage®. I attended a local workshop and really felt the benefit of the process in my life. It was at Breitenbush Hot Springs (which I highly recommend) for a SoulCollage® workshop when I decided to become a SoulCollage®Facilitator in order to gain a deeper understanding about the process and use it as a tool in my kit for life. Sharing it with others is my privilege and honor.

COST:  $50 

BRING: Please bring a journal, SoulCollage® cards if you have them, and a small item for a collective representation of our gathering. Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack. Hot tea and coffee provided. The instructor will also bring a crockpot of vegetarian stew and bread to share.
