Channeling the Creative Self Through Tarot and Magic with Coleman Stevenson
This workshop will introduce a range of spontaneous and magical methods for accessing creative impulses. We will find “the muse” in unexpected places and practice allowing it to come through without restriction. Prompts will use methods such as divination, magical writing, spontaneous mark-making, and severe constraints. We will also examine the work of artists and writers who have employed such methods in their own creations. This class is designed for artists and writers who want to broaden or recharge their practices, or for anyone seeking a greater connection with their creative self. Materials for all exercises will be provided as part of the registration fee.

Coleman Stevenson is an artist, writer and tarot practitioner based in Portland, OR. She is the creator of the Dark Exact Tarot Deck, the Vitriolic Tarot, the Personal Oracle, and the East O’ the Sun Oracle. Books by Stevenson include Breakfast: 43 Poems (Reprobate/GobQ Books, 2015) and The Accidental Rarefication of Pattern #5609 (bedouin books, 2012) and The Dark Exact Tarot Guide. Her poems have appeared in a variety of publications such as Paper Darts, Seattle Review, Gramma, E-ratio, Louisiana Literature, Mid-American Review, and the anthology Motionless from the Iron Bridge. She has has been a guest curator at various gallery spaces in Portland and has taught a variety of subjects at institutions in the area including creative writing, literature, folklore, culture & design, and image & text interaction. Her visual work has been shown at galleries around the Pacific Northwest.

Join Monicka and Britt for this sweet little summer gem of a retreat, where you’ll have an opportunity to move in a variety of ways while enjoying the beauty of the Pacific NW Coast! Both of these yoga and movement teachers share a dedication to smart and functional movement while offering you a chance to reconnect with yourself through yoga asana, somatic movement, meditation, playfulness and time in nature.

Monicka has been teaching movement since 1999. She has had the honor of being a part of The Bhaktishop Yoga Center since its inception, and under the gentle and encouraging guidance of Lisa Mae Osborn and Hari-bhakti dasi, as well as a number of other inspired and influential teachers, she has completed more than 500+ hours of yoga education and training. When not teaching or studying yoga, Monicka is either engaged in her work as a licensed massage therapist where she is able to spend valuable one-on-one time with those who are looking to find ease, presence, and balance in their bodies, or wrapped in love and life lessons with her dear little son, Kavi. It is Monicka’s goal as a bodywork practitioner, anatomy and kinesiology geek, yoga teacher, Mama, and student of bhakti yoga to serve and honor each individual that she encounters, whether on the mat or off, in the best and truest way that she knows how. “Movement is still endlessly fascinating to me, but it is truly the connection to Self and Source that we may encounter while engaged in yoga practices that has me hooked.”
Britt’s yoga journey started at age 17. As her body and soul changed and shifted with the ebbs and flows of life’s tides, yoga was the compass that gently guided her into new territory. Now, more than ever before, yoga is the way she shows respect for the beauty of life and the energy of the earth. Yoga is where Britt plays and explores; it’s where she finds a sense of being grounded and a sense of stillness. Britt seeks to meet all students with authenticity, giving them space to explore their own practice. She is a class of 2015 graduate of The Bhaktishop’s 200 Hour Program.

Each day begins with movement games, warm ups, and prompts to orient and stimulate your highest self, including a complete Hatha yoga exploration to root you in presence. Afternoons are yours to enjoy the Garden Spa and Finnish Sauna, comb the beach, get a tarot reading, and explore the Peninsula. Evenings are devoted to conversations around applied Yoga and Ayurvedic philosophy, and writing. We close every day with a body-based meditation, and yoga practice to soothe the nervous system, and prepare your body for deep rest.

How the Light Gets In with instructor Suzie Kassouf
It can feel unbearable to carry the pain of our world in this unprecedented era of social upheaval and ecological destruction. Luckily, the task of tending to our broken world can infuse us with life-affirming purpose, connection and joy. Through vinyasa, meditation, group activities and time spent in nature, we will learn to honor our pain as a precious signifier of our compassion and care for our world. Most importantly, we will develop in ourselves a robust and muscular hope, rooted in the very unpredictability of these times. Leonard Cohen implores us, “ring the bells that still can ring/ forget your perfect offering/ there is a crack in everything/ that’s how the light gets in.” I look forward to sharing this with you.
Suzie Kassouf is an educator, yoga instructor and climate justice activist. After 10 years of personal practice, she completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training at The People’s Yoga with Suniti Dernovsek in 2018. She has worked extensively on multiple campaigns including Bernie Sanders’ 2016 Presidential Run and the 2018 Portland Clean Energy Fund. Suzie believes strongly that our world is desperate for healing on multiple levels, and that true liberation can be found in community and service to others. She is passionate about marrying activism and spirituality and strives to courageously live the path of nonviolence in her life and work.

Carve a Wooden Spoon: A Carving and Green Woodworking Workshop with Emilie Rigby
canceled – Learn to safely use a myriad of hand tools in order to carve your own wooden spoon! In this class we will be splitting logs of freshly cut wood and using hatchets and knives to carve them into beautiful and useful objects. You will leave this class with a spoon and enough knowledge to continue the craft. Tools available for purchase at the end of class.
Emilie Rigby is a self-proclaimed “crazy spoon lady.” She carved her first spoon 8 years ago, while sitting around a campfire with some friends. After 4 hours she had a very ugly spoon and some blisters to show for her effort. She realized that she had spent those four hours living completely in the moment. 8 years and thousands of spoons later, she is teaching others how to carve so that they too can live in the moment. These days, you can find her in Portland, OR driving around in her camper van and picking up logs from development sites to turn into spoons.

Lunar Being
with Suzy Olsen

Under the waxing crescent moon, we will gather for a multiple day retreat focused on accessing the depths of our lunar selves. This retreat is designed to teach us how to better live in sync with the lunar cycles as well as with our own ‘lunar being’.
Each attendee will be given a copy of their natal astrological chart. The natal chart will be used to decipher the role of the moon in your life, as well as the complexities and uniqueness of your moon self. Through various teachings and activities, we will uncover how each of us can better utilize the powers of our moon beings in our daily lives to achieve greater fulfillment and wellness.
In astrology, the moon represents our inner realm and what we value most. Our innermost desires are reflected in the moon, as well as the secrets to unlocking those desires. La luna is the sacred hunter of the zodiac, feeding our soul what it needs most. Ever changing, the moon is elusive and mysterious. By better understanding the moon, we bring ourselves closer to harmonizing body, mind and spirit.

Suzy Olsen is the creator and owner of Chariot, a spiritually focused housewares boutique and design studio located in Astoria, Oregon. In 2011, she officially began her career as a professional tarot reader and astrologer. These days, she performs private readings and several spiritual workshops from her store location. Her intuitive readings give insights on personal growth and healing, and her specialty is uncovering ‘hidden’ truths that may empower and inspire her clients.
In early childhood, she first noticed a strong connection to unseen forces, and began researching various occult subjects. Studying astrology has been a lifelong passion, beginning in the early teenage years. After training with numerous astrologers over the years, Suzy has combined both traditional and modern astrological methods in her practice. Many of her astrological techniques come from the ancient Hellenistic period, stemming back thousands of years.
Perhaps because she is ruled by the moon, she feels especially drawn to working with the lunar energies for personal development and ritual. She has hosted several astrology moon workshops at Chariot, writes a monthly ‘new moon newsletter’ and regularly hosts magical seasonal retreats in Nehalem, OR.

Fall/Winter 2019 Workshop Series
Sandalmaking with Rachel Sees Snails Shoes
We’ll explore every step of the sandal-making process, starting off by customizing trusted patterns to suit your own feet and design preferences. (Any design is possible: tying sandals, buckling sandals, or slides.) Then we’ll cut and assemble the leather pieces, paying close attention to fit and attach to a cushiony rubber sole. I’ll bring a wide selection of leather colors to choose from. You’ll be able to design and make any sandal as long as it has an open toe and an open heel. This class is hard work: be prepared to use utility knives, adhesive, hammers, wooden mallets, shoe anvils, and to get barefoot! The best part is, you’ll be able to replicate the process later on your own, with only a few basic tools.
My name is Rachel Corry and I make sandals and shoes in Portland, Oregon. I’ve been teaching sandal classes for 9 years. I believe that learning to make sandals is a great first step if you’re interested in making your own shoes. My brand, Rachel Sees Snail Shoes, began in 2010. Meeting a clogmaker in the UK first sparked my interest in shoemaking but it wasn’t until a fire in my apartment burned all my shoes (!) that I set out to learn to make my own, working to replace my favorite sandals one pair at a time. I drew upon the wisdom of various shoemakers, cobblers, and old books to help me along my way.

RACHEL SEES SNAIL SHOES makes simple, modern sandals- one pair at a time. RSSS believes in sustainable choices, working small, and empowering people to make their own shoes. Rather than creating just more products for the consumer market, I hope to make unique shoes that have a personal connection to their wearer. Whether you’ve made your own shoes in my class, or collaborated with me on a custom pair, I want my shoes to stand out as wearable art objects worn with pride and a knowledge of how they were constructed.

BRING: Wearing easy to slip on/off shoes is helpful. All supplies provided. Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack for lunch break around 1pm. Coffee and tea provided.

Women and the Frontier: Memoir Writing with Marianne Monson
In this writing workshop, we will discover some of the women who traversed Oregon’s frontiers with local author Marianne Monson. Through a variety of writing exercises, discussion, and on location prompts, we will explore the concepts of wilderness and frontiers in our own lives. The workshop will culminate in a class open mic for sharing original poems, stories, and songs.
Monson’s book Frontier Grit came out in 2016. It features twelve incredible pioneer women drawn from all corners of the globe who settled the American West who endured hardships, overcame obstacles, broke barriers, and changed the world. The book was nominated for the 2017 American Library Association Amelia Bloomer Award recognizing books that ”affirm positive roles for girls and women.” -Amelia Bloomer Project

Marianne Monson is the author of ten books for children and adults, mostly centered on women’s history. She holds a BA in English Literature and an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has two children and writes from a 100 year old house in the town of Astoria, Oregon. She has taught Creative Writing and English for a number of colleges, and currently teaches at Clatsop Community College.
