Talia Keys is a genre crossing multi-instrumental “musical powerhouse” bringing you her brand of Soul-Funk-Rock n’ Roll, with unique vocal stylings and a storytelling flow.
Sourcing energies largely compared to the bluesy rawness of Janis Joplin and the fire of Jimi Hendrix. Synergizing that old soul vibe with new school sounds, best described by Katie Bain as “blistering.” Having been “struck by her talent, stage presence and refreshing candor.” – Insomniac: 2014 Best of Electric Forest.

Can You Learn To Be A Poet?: A Writing Workshop with Nick Jaina

Can You Learn To Be A Poet?: A Writing Workshop with Nick Jaina

Is the ability to write poetry something you are born with, or can you cultivate it?

Naomi Shihab Nye says, “Your life is a poem.”

What if we don’t see it in ourselves? What if our life feels mundane and unpoetic?

Most academic approaches to writing poetry stress an intellectual understanding of the mechanics, and discuss the great canon of poetry that already exists.

This approach is important but incomplete. Nick Jaina believes that poetry also comes from having a reverence for the world. The best way to do that is not intellectual, but actually physical.

Nick will lead a poetry writing workshop that entails a short guided meditation, some light movement, a meditation walk, and writing exercises. It will culminate with students reading poetry aloud while Nick provides a musical soundtrack.

Poetry was meant to be read lovingly to someone else, but it is rare that we get a chance to do this in an environment where we feel reverence for ourselves and the world.

When you read poetry over music, it gives you the reader more confidence to slow down, leave space, and wring the truth out of every word. The way those words feel vibrating in your body, the way they feel in the air, the way the people in the room react to them, all of those sensations are part of the poem. Poetry is a living thing that needs to be let loose. We can never know it just from its domesticated form, watching it pace around in a cage.

The world can use more poets, precisely because it is a job that pays nothing. It aims to bring a heightened focus on true things. Come join Nick in learning how to be a poet.

Nick Jaina is an author and musician. His first book, the memoir Get It While You Can, was a finalist for the 2016 Oregon Book Award. He has released several albums, co-founded a ballet company, recording soundtracks for feature films and documentaries. He teaches writing workshops around the world that involve Tarot, meditation, theatrical movement, and, of course, love.

Tsar Anise @ Sou'wester Lodge
Sep 22 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Tsar Anise @ Sou'wester Lodge

Tsar Anise is the Pacific Northwest-based, dreamy bedroom-pop recording project of Sarah Van Horn, turned live two-piece with the addition of Tasha Trasher. The two, sharing a love of things lush and beautiful, create unique and emotional recordings while seeking to connect through their genuine and dynamic live shows.
Sarah (pdx locals Vibrissae, Visiting Diplomats, So Long Forever, Larrabee) began writing and recording for the project in 2015 while in various states of life and locale transition. The songs, materializing out of her ruminations on womanhood, lost love and faith, mental illness, and familial estrangement resulted in the Leisure/Love Demo (Nov.2016). Her style of dreamy, pop-inspired music weaves through genres and shows little concern for traditional structure or rules; relying more on feeling and story to guide the outcome. Tasha (Violaine, Magic Mansion, Kim Baxter, Hope and Anchor, and innumerable other well-loved PDX bands) joined in late 2017. With Tasha bringing her experience as a seasoned multi-instrumentalist and song writer to the creative process, the two are working on new songs and recordings. Their live sound has been compared to Low, Neko Case and The Cocteau Twins.
Tsar Anise is the ‘verby soundtrack to your quotidian-escapist daydreams and the radio playing while you make french toast on the weekend. Tsar Anise is sincere, self-indulgent survival in a space suit.
This event is free and open to the public.

Fall/Winter 2018 Workshop Series

Dance Therapy/Healing Through Movement Practice and Creation with Sarah Brahim

This workshop will help you discover deeper connection to your own body and the way you move, no matter your current level. We will explore dancing through memories and personal experiences working to continue intentional dance and movement relationships between our body and mind. We will also have fun and practice dancing to just feel good, release tension, and let go. There will be a creative portion of the class where we will (weather permitting) take movement therapy skills out into nature. We will also incorporate bodywork and massage to finish the workshop feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Sarah Brahim is a movement artist passionate about creating meaningful work with artists of varying mediums. She grew up studying, choreographing, performing, and teaching jazz, ballet, and tap in Portland, Oregon. She then studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance and in 2016 she graduated from London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS) and holds a BA Hons degree in contemporary dance. At LCDS she further explored the depth and resonance of movement, discovering her passion for improvisation, collaboration, choreographing, and healing through movement. In 2017 she graduated from Portland State University with a degree in Public Health specializing in Community Health Education. Returning to her roots, Sarah is currently crafting, choreographing, and performing live with local Portland artists and expanding her repertory as a tap dancer. She believes dance can be life changing, transformative, and a universal language to bring people together.
