Busy Hands Quiet Minds: Weaving as Meditation with Samantha LaMont & Natalie Novak
Feb 25 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Workshop Series at The Sou’wester

Busy Hands Quiet Minds: Weaving as Meditation with Samantha LaMont & Natalie Novak

In this class we’ll explore creative meditation through the use of flower essences and the ancient craft of weaving. Weaving is a methodical and slow practice.  As our hands get involved with each stitch our minds are free to rest from our conscious stream of thought. It is in this state of quiet that we are best able to hear our creative voice and let it SHINE!  The flower essences will unlock any barriers to your true creative self as your fingers dance across the loom.

Instructors Natalie Novak and Samantha LaMont will be your guides as you use these simple, traditional tools to enter a meditative state. Join this class and learn not only how to weave, but also how weaving can be a tool used daily for self care and meditation.  Students will leave with the flower essences we use in class plus a complete weaving kit.  Kit includes a frame loom, essential weaving tools, illustrated instructions, yarn and a special tote to carry it all home in.

Samantha LaMont is a weaver, painter, and teacher living in Portland, OR.  She creates ritual art and cultivates a practice of being through guided meditation and flower exploration. Her work is often spiritual and abstractly explores themes of expanded consciousness and mysticism. Samantha has been studying with her mentor, Shayne Case, an intuitive healer, for over two years. Learning about healing and the art of gem/flower essence through meditation and spirit guided inner exploration. She started her painting and weaving business, Cardinal Point, in 2014 and has been blown away by the encouragement of the north west community. Teaching has always been a passion, showing others how to paint and weave comes naturally, seeing the excitement of students is pure joy. Art is for everyone, and it is an honor for her to share this gift.

Natalie Novak is an artist in Portland, Oregon. She has studied Navajo style weaving and tapestry at the Damascus Fiber Arts School as well as drawing and painting at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. Natalie works primarily in tapestry, drawing from ancient and contemporary weaving techniques to explore color relationships, modern mysticism and the (super)natural world. Currently Natalie maintains a dedicated practice at her home studio and teaches this meditative craft to students in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.  Through weaving Natalie has cultivated so much joy; through teaching she is honored to share that magic with others.

COST:  $40 plus a $65 material fee (Please pay material fee directly to instructor.) Materials fee includes a complete Weaving as Meditation kit:  loom, set of weaving tools, flower & gem essences, illustrated weaving instruction book, essence zine, warp string for future weaves and lots of yarn and fibers to take home in a specially screen-printed tote.

BRING: An open heart and an inquisitive spirit! Please bring a sack lunch and/or snack (hot tea and coffee provided).

Mindfulness Talk with Shanna Gillette
Mar 2 @ 10:00 am – 10:45 am

WEEKLY EVENT

Mindfulness Talk with Shanna Gillette

Shanna is a certified yoga teacher, ordained metaphysical counselor and empath. Her journey began as a small child inadvertently discovering deep meditation as an escape from abuse. Having always had an interest in the unseen and unexplained, she began having out of body experiences before learning to speak.  Eventually she received a regents scholarship to ASU for religious studies. A series of intense life changing experiences including a serious car accident brought her to the first of several “awakenings,” beginning most notably in 2005. She now helps people through the shift in consciousness we are currently experiencing, assisting them along the path toward self-forgiveness and self-love – the greatest journey of all.

Truly exemplifying her favorite quote from Kahlil Gibran, “The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain,’ she adds, “The journey to wellness is a constantly evolving process where we learn to nurture body and mind beginning with the heart; To truly understand that the most important step to long-lasting good health and harmony isn’t necessarily about sweating our way to perfect abs or contorting our bodies into painful positions. It starts within. It’s about self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, and self-love. It’s about learning to accept and respect ourselves wherever we may be. Through the physicality of yoga, we tune into a deeper more expansive space beyond the trivial day to day. We learn that it’s ok to nurture ourselves and to ALLOW our spirits to be happy.”

Shanna received her yoga teacher’s certification at Bryan Kest’s world renowned studio in Santa Monica, CA. She attended Arizona State University for Religious Studies, and is currently studying at the University of Metaphysics Sedona. She is available for private yoga and counseling sessions and can be found at:

Plant The Seed Writing Workshop: The Magnificent Practice of Getting Out What Your Heart & Guts Have To Say with Franciszka Voeltz & Jennifer Morales
Mar 10 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Spring 2018 Workshop Series at The Sou’wester

Plant The Seed Writing Workshop: The Magnificent Practice of Getting Out What Your Heart & Guts Have To Say
with Franciszka Voeltz & Jennifer Morales

Co-led by Franciszka Voeltz and Jennifer Morales, Plant the Seed is a workshop designed to break writers of all levels (including those who don’t call themselves writers) through barriers that keep them from creating the work they are meant to write. Together we will practice moving forward in our writing–without apology. Writers of all genres are welcome to join in the work and play of cracking open our writer-hearts, busting out of our stuck practices, and harnessing the power of what emerges. We will close the workshop by naming new commitments to our writing–planting the seed for future work. If you find any part of you saying “YES!” while reading this workshop description, then this is our personal nudge encouraging you to listen to the yesses! If you struggle with making time for your writing and somehow everything else becomes more important, tell your words you have not abandoned them and put this on your calendar!

From the crossroads of writing and social practice, Franciszka Voeltz writes poems-to-go on a portable typewriter for magnificent strangers in public places, curates a collective poem to the entire planet, and has two decades’ experience facilitating community writing workshops and readings in living rooms, at universities, and everywhere in between. Writing together is her favorite way to be with people. Voeltz’s chapbook POETXTS is available from Imaginary Friend Press, and her work has appeared in journals including Dark Mountain, Analecta Literary Journal, and Adrienne. Voeltz is the recipient of various poetry fellowships including those granted by the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, Santa Fe Art Institute, and Art Farm. She earned an MFA in Writing from the University of California, San Diego. www.franciszkavoeltz.com

Jennifer Morales is a queer Latina poet, fiction writer, and performance artist whose work across genres wrestles with questions of gender, identity, complicity, and harm. She has led writing workshops for all ages—1st-graders through adults—and has been called (by the adults, not the 1st-graders) “a natural-born teacher.” She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University-Los Angeles in 2011. Jennifer’s first book, Meet Me Halfway (UW Press, 2015), a short story collection about life in hyper-segregated Milwaukee, was Wisconsin Center for the Book’s 2016 “Book of the Year.” Reviewers called it “a compelling debut” (Booklist) and Jennifer “an impressively gifted writer” (Midwest Book Review). Excerpts of her unpublished novel, Junction, appeared in The Account (spring 2017) and in Happy Hours: Our Lives in the Gay Bars (Flashpoint, 2017), edited by S. Renée Bess and Lee Lynch. Recent publications also include poems in MAYDAY and in “Pulsamos,” a special issue of Glass Poetry dedicated to the Pulse nightclub victims. She’s the president of the board of the Driftless Writing Center, building literary community in rural Southwestern Wisconsin. www.moraleswrites.com
