Ponyghost
Aug 26 @ 8:00 pm

PG

Ponyghost is a duo consisting of songwriter Jason Paglia and upright bassist, Perry Pfister. The songs, stemming from Jason’s original compositions and lyrics, are constructed from elements of acoustic and electric guitar, upright bass, Fender Rhodes, synthesizer, and sampled sounds. These elements portray a map of each song which follow Jason’s lyrics over the song’s unique topography, sculpted from the duo’s involved sense of dynamics and textural changes. The music bears the intensity of certain modern classical music as well as the bold strength of a solo presentation of poetry.
Ponyghost was formed in 2008 in Portland, OR, performing in intimate spaces like Valentines, The Dunes, and house shows. This performance will be the duo’s first presentation of their current songs after a long break from live performance as Ponyghost. The Sou’Wester has graciously provided a week-long residency that Ponyghost has utilized to create this performance.

Bart Budwig & Mike Midlo
Aug 27 @ 8:00 pm

Bart Budwig doesn’t write the big songs. He writes the songs about the places between the hills, in the draws and hidden canyons where truth is a little more in focus, stories can take their time gettin’ told, heartbreak is a place of deep reflection, and melodies don’t have to wear rhinestone suits or drive new, shiny, cars to be beautiful. Bart’s also not afraid of working out of the spotlight- he engineered not only his own full-length Whiskey Girl (2012), but also albums and tours with Radiation City, Holiday Friends, Girlfriends, Misé, John Craigie, Edmund Wayne, and Mama Doll.

“Mike Midlo is a storyteller disguised as a musician. His latest project, MidLo, received a grant from Portland’s Regional Arts & Culture Council and was released on March 5, 2013.” www.getyourpitchforkon.wordpress.com

Brooke Shepherd

Growing up on the West Coast with the Pacific Ocean in my backyard has most definitely shaped my creative processes: salt air, the rhythm of waves crashing, the cycle of the tides and the moon…these are the memories that I invoke which inform most of my work. Seawater Studio is my textile arts studio based in Portland, Oregon. I create a seasonal collection of garments and accessories as well as collaborate with other artists in order to produce one-of-a-kind handwoven yardage for the fashion, interior design, and costuming industries. I aim to use only sustainable and organic yarns, dyes, and fabrics in my work and am especially inspired by the mission of the  Fibershed movement.

Deirdre Spahr, Deirdre’s love for the outdoors began as a child in Pennsylvania where, from a young age, she and her little sister had free range of the farm fields, woods and creeks surrounding their home. Her parents are both active environmentalists and outdoor enthusiasts who have long supported her interests in sustainable development. Before becoming a Waldorf school teacher and moving to Portland, Deirdre worked with non-profit groups in New York to develop educational programming for children and adults, on environmental and humanitarian issues. It is Deirdre’s hope to reawaken conscious connection with nature and community through fun . . . and a fair amount of goading people into putting away their cell phones to engage directly with mud, bugs, skipping stones, stinging nettle, the pouring rain, climbing trees and more, as much as possible.
