Baptist Arms plus Anna Fritz!
Feb 3 @ 8:00 pm

Baptist Arms create a dystopian gothic folk landscape with spare instrumentation and evocative harmonies.

***

Anna Fritz is a cello-wielding activist folksinger who plays songs that crack you open and heal you. She creates a musical alchemy of cello and voice, strumming the cello like a guitar and playing beautiful melodies with the bow as she sings. Her songs boldly dig into themes of colonization, climate change, racial justice, gender, spirituality, and connection to the natural world. Like the great folksingers of previous generations, Anna is a catalyst for people to sing together. Her songs are infectious and easy to learn, imbued with a sense of timelessness as if they’ve been sung for generations. Her disarming, gentle nature and powerful presence gets unlikely crowds of people singing together from town halls to night clubs.

Listeners will find plenty of rockstar cred in this folksinger’s past. Anna Fritz is a sought after cellist with a 15 year tenure spanning the world of classical music and Portland, Oregon’s indie rock scene. She toured nationally with Portland Cello Project for seven years and can be heard on albums from My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses, The Decemberists, Dirty Projectors, and case/lang/veirs. As a solo artist, Anna Fritz has independently released three albums and performed for audiences in more than 50 venues in seven states.

This event is free and open to the public.

Mindfulness Talk with Shanna Gillette
Feb 9 @ 10:00 am – 10:45 am

WEEKLY EVENT

Mindfulness Talk with Shanna Gillette

Shanna is a certified yoga teacher, ordained metaphysical counselor and empath. Her journey began as a small child inadvertently discovering deep meditation as an escape from abuse. Having always had an interest in the unseen and unexplained, she began having out of body experiences before learning to speak.  Eventually she received a regents scholarship to ASU for religious studies. A series of intense life changing experiences including a serious car accident brought her to the first of several “awakenings,” beginning most notably in 2005. She now helps people through the shift in consciousness we are currently experiencing, assisting them along the path toward self-forgiveness and self-love – the greatest journey of all.

Truly exemplifying her favorite quote from Kahlil Gibran, “The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain,’ she adds, “The journey to wellness is a constantly evolving process where we learn to nurture body and mind beginning with the heart; To truly understand that the most important step to long-lasting good health and harmony isn’t necessarily about sweating our way to perfect abs or contorting our bodies into painful positions. It starts within. It’s about self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, and self-love. It’s about learning to accept and respect ourselves wherever we may be. Through the physicality of yoga, we tune into a deeper more expansive space beyond the trivial day to day. We learn that it’s ok to nurture ourselves and to ALLOW our spirits to be happy.”

Shanna received her yoga teacher’s certification at Bryan Kest’s world renowned studio in Santa Monica, CA. She attended Arizona State University for Religious Studies, and is currently studying at the University of Metaphysics Sedona. She is available for private yoga and counseling sessions and can be found at:

Objects / Belongings: Writing and Drawing about Our STUFF with Kate Bingaman-Burt
Feb 11 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Workshop Series at The Sou’wester

Objects / Belongings: Writing and Drawing about Our STUFF with Kate Bingaman-Burt

In this workshop participants will be asked to bring in their own personal objects that are meaningful (or not so meaningful). Kate will encourage participants to think about their everyday objects in new and different ways. What stories can we share of ourselves through our objects? What stories do our objects tell of us? Participants will explore a variety of illustration techniques and writing/editing methods to produce drawings and short narratives about our relationships with each object, and will compile a collaborative publication of the days work. Along with thinking and making things about our stuff, we will also learn about small press publications, different illustration methods and writing techniques. No drawing or writing experience necessary!

Kate Bingaman-Burt is an illustrator and educator. Her work orbits around the objects in our lives: the things we buy, the things we discard, and the collectivity and social interaction that can arise from cycles of consumption. Via illustrations, daily documentation, publications, events, large-scale participatory projects, client work, and a full-time role as educator, Kate’s work invites a dialogue about contemporary forms of exchange. She is an Associate Professor in Graphic Design at Portland State University and sits on the boards of Design Week Portland and Independent Publishing Resource Center. This spring she opened her space Outlet which holds workshops, events and houses a zine library. Come say hi if you are in Portland!

Workshop Series at The Sou’wester

Poetry Through List Making with Heather Douglas

Have you ever been intimidated by the process of writing poetry? Famous author Ray Bradbury was known to use the technique of list making to create his stories because it allowed him to “turn off” the internal editor and unlock pure creativity. In this course, we will create 10 poems; you will also leave the class with a custom made workbook to continue your poetry journey at home.

Heather Douglas believes in the transformative power of poetry. She is an educator, illustrator and writer from Astoria, Oregon and a recent recipient of the Astoria Visual Arts Writer in Residence. She is a self-published author of 2 illustrated coloring books, a book of poetry and a frequent contributor to Coast Weekend.
