Intro to Handbuilding 4-week Workshop Series w/Hans Miles.

9/9 through 9/23, 5:30-7:30p. Ages 10-14 w/an adult or 14+. $140.

In this class, learners will gain a comprehensive understanding of the handbuilding fundamentals of pinching and coiling to create their own unique vessels.

Day One: We will cover the basics of handbuilding, including the essential techniques and skills required for working with clay. By the end of the first session, you will have begun creating a small vessel, giving you hands-on experience with the process.

Day Two: This session will focus on refining your first vessel. We explore form design principles, helping you understand the aesthetics and functionality of pottery. 

Days Three: This session is dedicated to bringing your personal vessel project to life. With guidance and support, you will apply the skills and knowledge you’ve gained to create a personalized vessel. This is an opportunity to explore your creativity and develop your unique style.

This class will begin with the basics of throwing pottery on the wheel and guide learners towards their choice of one of three final projects: cups, bowls, or planters. The first session will cover the fundamental mechanics and process of throwing. The second session will focus on the nuances of form and technique for your specific project, while the third session will be dedicated to refining your work.

COMMUNITY CLAY PLAY

At Ilwaco Artworks

Clay Play is a casual, beginner-friendly session where you can learn handbuilding skills to create a finished piece! Ages 10+ w/an adult or ages 14+. $35/person. Register for any four Clay Plays for $100.

August Clay Plays | 10a-1p:

  • 8/4: Sake Sets- Pinch/coil-built simple pouring vessel/vase with wide belly and narrow neck. Set of 4-6 matching shot-glass sized vessels.
  • 8/11: Incense Holders
  • 8/17: “The Open Cube” / Five-walled objects – Slab built vases, catch-all’s, herb planters, seed starters, bonsai, wall vases, jewelry holders. Leather hard slab construction.
  • 8/18: Wind Chimes
  • 8/24: Soft Slab Impression Objects – Soft slabs rolled over local leaves/flora and slump formed over ready-made objects like cups, bowls, cans, etc.
  • 8/25: Ilwaco Art Walk Drop-in  (1-4p no rsvp necessary): Mono Print Tiles.
