Traditional Japanese Shibori Dying and Sashiko Stitching Workshop
w/Jodie Cord $100
On Saturday 4/6, You will learn about traditional Japanese methods of Shibori dying and then we will put that learning into practice! You will learn how to prepare the indigo dye bath, bind, fold, stitch or otherwise block the fabric to create a pattern, then prepare and dye your pieces. Each person will have the chance to try several methods.
On Sunday 4/7 You will use the Shibori fabric pieces you made to practice the traditional Japanese art of Sashiko stitching. You can bring something to repair or embellish such as jeans or a canvas fabric item, or you can create a work of art to be hung, framed or used for a future project. You can do a basic running stitch pattern or you can use a pattern of your choosing.

Wheel Throwing Fundamentals Workshop
w/Kaitlyn Nelson $150
Wheel Throwing Fundamentals (getting centered) and hand building exploration. During the two week course we will be developing beginner skills and techniques for wheel thrown ceramics. This course is designed so give each student 1:1 time to learn how to wheel throw. Between individual wheel throwing sessions with the instructor student will be creating hand built objects and are encouraged explore the properties of clay as a medium. Students will likely bring home 1-2 cylindrical objects and a variety of hand built items.

Beach Books and Zines Workshop
w/Jessica Hoffman $60
Using found materials from the beach as our inspiration, we will create books that explore the give and take of human influence on the beach landscape. We will experiment with low-tech printmaking methods, such as rubbings and stenciling, to create unique zines and art books that catalog our findings.

Jessica Hoffman was born in Portland, OR, grew up in Southeastern Virginia, spent a few formative years in Washington, DC, nearly a decade in Philadelphia, PA, and currently lives and works in Seattle, WA.
Jessica received her BFA in Photography from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC and her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She currently teaches in the Fine Arts Department at Seattle Central College. Along with her partner, Justin Quinlan, Jessica runs Paper Press Punch, a print studio and bindery focused on producing Risograph printed comics, prints, and artist books.
Jessica’s work investigates memory, obsessive behaviors, and interactions between people and communication technology. Her installations include work in several mediums, among them video, photography, books, and printmaking. Jessica has previously been a resident artist at In Cahoots in Petaluma, CA and Trailer Blaze Comics Residency at Sou’Wester through Short Run. Her work has received numerous awards, including an Artist Trust GAP Grant and Pratt Fine Arts Center Fellowship. She has exhibited throughout the US, including at SOIL Gallery and with Interstitial in Seattle, Antenna Gallery in New Orleans, Center for Emerging Visual Artists in Philadelphia, and the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art in Wilmington. Jessica serves as an Advisory Board Member for Short Run Seattle.

Students with learn proportions, sculptural rendering, surface anatomy, solid building techniques, and many ceramic finishing options while building a life-size human head out of clay.

About Paige – Born and raised in Portland, Paige was introduced to ceramics at a young age to help with deficiencies in mainstream academia. She found her stride in making the human form, taking it into college, and earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Ceramics. In a constant pursuit to expand her practice, she has participated in many residences in the US and abroad. This passion led her to take ceramic-centric jobs such as production potter, glaze department supervisor, and adjunct ceramic faculty. Currently, she teaches weekly Ceramics classes and Workshops at Radius Ceramic Studio and in her own classroom The Wright Clay Studio in Portland.

Explore the world of Raku. This process creates unique and surprising surface patterns. $80
May 4th: 2-3p demonstration | 3-5p handbuilding workshop
Jun 1st: 2-3p Raku final firing (hands on!)
Includes: Raku clay to make 3-7 pieces, demonstration & two weeks of open studio access following your workshop. We will start the workshop by demonstrating the raku process. Then you’ll work on handbuilding your pieces with raku clay. You will have access to open studio hours (M,W,F 3-7p & Sat/Sun 10a-5p) for the following 2 weeks after your workshop to develop your pieces. Plan to come back June 1st to raku fire your own pieces!
