Story is a Chance: Writing as Spiritual Practice
Feb 23 @ 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

Winter 2019 Workshop Series

Story is a Chance: Writing as Spiritual Practice with instructor Melissa Bennett

Gerald Vizenor (Anishinaabe) wrote, “Life is a chance, a story is a chance. That I am here is a chance.” Our lives are miracles tied to the lives of our ancestors and to the lives of our descendants. All of the moments, big and small, that brought us to this point have meaning and significance. In this workshop, we will utilize sitting and walking meditation practices as a way to slow down and take time to listen deeply to our own stories. We will utilize writing practice as a means of exploring the many chances our ancestors took to bring us to this moment, the chances we have taken to bring us to now, and how these chances impact the stories of our own lives and the lives of those who come after us. We will share our work with each other, trusting in the chance to create change in the world and imagine new possibilities for our future.

Melissa Bennett (Umatilla/Nimiipuu/Sac & Fox/Anishinaabe), M.Div. is a writer, storyteller, educator, and spiritual care provider. Twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Melissa’s work focuses on social justice, culture, tradition, and spirituality. Melissa was a 2015 recipient of the Evergreen State College Longhouse Native Creative Development Grant. Have you experienced butterflies in your stomach before giving a presentation, or trying something new? Do you get a “frog in your throat” when you have something really meaningful to say but don’t necessarily know how to express it? Have you noticed your bowel movements shift when you have traveled, changed jobs or homes? These are some of the ways our subtle body imbalances ripple into our physical experience. In this workshop, you will be encouraged to explore your personal relationship with your 7 major energy centers, or chakras, of the subtle body through multiple senses and activities that are fun, safe, simple and inquisitive. You will gain a deeper knowledge of your own energy and be offered simple practices and insights to practice at home that support alignment and balance within your own energy. Find Your Golden Thread: A Writing Workshop with Madeleine Eno

Find Your Golden Thread: A Writing Workshop with Madeleine Eno

There’s a lot of talk these days about writing your story. And some think that means starting with your great-great grandmother and ending with what you had for breakfast this morning. So, writing becomes something daunting, dusty and overwhelming—and ripe for comparison with other more funny, interesting, adventurous people.

What would happen, though, if you started to think of your “stories,” instead of your “story”? When you know your Golden Thread, you can scan back through your life and pull from your own storytelling archives, so you have a bottomless well of material.

In this workshop, you’ll learn to polish your storytelling lens—what I call your “golden thread”—that unique and quirky point of view that’s evolved with your life, experiences and the message you’re here to share. You’ll have time to work your writing muscles with prompts, get some live feedback and hone your writing voice, and choose some stories to develop further.

Madeleine Eno, MA, helps creative entrepreneurs remember what they are here to say, and discover the most compelling container in which to say it.

She weaves lessons from her previous life as a magazine editor and yoga teacher into her work. In her Find Your Golden Thread and Book Mapping sessions and classes, clients and students discover the soul and meaning of their stories, so they can then confidently write their books, connect with their tribe, and change the world in their own magical way. Her students and clients describe Madeleine as a mix of wordsmith, alchemist, cheerleader, hand-holder, editor and intuitive guide. Find more at www.inthewriteplace.com
