The Art of Seasonal Nourishment: An Ayurvedic “Cook, Learn & Eat” Dinner Party with Elyssia Maya Schaeffer
Aug 25 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Summer 2018 Workshop Series

The Art of Seasonal Nourishment: An Ayurvedic “Cook, Learn & Eat” Dinner Party with Elyssia Maya Schaeffer

Come cook, learn and dine with Elyssia Maya Schaeffer, Ayurvedic Nutritionist, after a fun day at the coast! We will explore summer seasonal foods, herbs and spices while preparing Ayurvedic Kitchari – a delicious traditional Ancient Indian one-pot cleansing dish – and an herbal refrigerant tea.

Filled with fresh, nourishing ingredients to balance the energies of any season, Kitchari is an indispensable addition to your repertoire of home recipes. Apply your new Ayurvedic cooking skills to make quick, healthy and filling school or work lunches, a hearty meal to share with loved ones or a supportive dish for your next cleanse.

Through this interactive workshop, you will learn which foods are your best allies in summertime and gain a deeper understanding of why eating seasonally is so critical to our health through the wisdom of Ayurvedic principles.

Elyssia Maya Schaeffer is a Certified Ayurveda and Yoga Teacher, Holistic Nutritionist and Certified Wellness Coach living in Portland, Oregon with her fun loving husband and two cheeky chihuahuas. Elyssia found Ayurveda – the medical system of Ancient India, which translated from Sanskrit means “the knowledge of life” – through Yoga. After years of asana practice, she was drawn to the philosophical side of the Yoga tradition and from here was introduced to the sister science of Yoga – Ayurveda. In addition to teaching workshops in Portland, Elyssia co-runs the monthly Center for Ayurveda and Yoga Study Clinic with her mentor and a colleague. (To learn more about the CAYS clinic, email anandamayaayurveda@gmail.com or Instagram at anandamayaayurvedapdx.)

Ecstatic Dance with Scott Schaeffer
Aug 26 @ 11:00 am – 12:45 pm

Summer 2018 Workshop Series

Ecstatic Dance with Scott Schaeffer

Find the joy in moving your body, regardless of how it looks to others!

Ecstatic Dance is a term used to describe free form dance and in general describes transcendental, sacred dance, and other practices of movement meditation. Ecstatic Dance events are differentiated by being inclusive to all ages in a talk-free space with little to no direction on how members are supposed to dance.  While there is no single format or guidelines that all events called Ecstatic Dance adhere to, as a rule there is no talking, no cameras, and no judgement, thus creating a safe and open space where you can turn your mind off and be led by your heart and your rhythm.   There is only the pulsing beat of the music under the bright light of day, best greeted stone cold sober and ready to groove. Plan on moving your body in a music filled space in a way that is freeform to the uniqueness of you!

While not quite a workshop, Scott Schaeffer will facilitate this event with a brief introduction, definition and history, of this form of free-form dance. Then join in as Schaeffer plays a mix of world and electronic rhythm and beats for this event.

Scott Schaeffer lives in Portland, Oregon and is moved by music, love, and laughter. “Through dance, we believe everyone can discover, explore, unleash, and enhance their individual potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. By engaging our senses and listening to our bodies, we connect to others and shape a consciousness that extends beyond our own.”

COST: $5

BRING: Wear comfortable clothes that allow your body to move without restriction and comfortable shoes that allow your feet to move on a smooth concrete floor.

Can You Learn To Be A Poet?: A Writing Workshop with Nick Jaina
Sep 12 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Fall/Winter 2018 Workshop Series

Can You Learn To Be A Poet?: A Writing Workshop with Nick Jaina

Is the ability to write poetry something you are born with, or can you cultivate it?

Naomi Shihab Nye says, “Your life is a poem.”

What if we don’t see it in ourselves? What if our life feels mundane and unpoetic?

Most academic approaches to writing poetry stress an intellectual understanding of the mechanics, and discuss the great canon of poetry that already exists.

This approach is important but incomplete. Nick Jaina believes that poetry also comes from having a reverence for the world. The best way to do that is not intellectual, but actually physical.

Nick will lead a poetry writing workshop that entails a short guided meditation, some light movement, a meditation walk, and writing exercises. It will culminate with students reading poetry aloud while Nick provides a musical soundtrack.

Poetry was meant to be read lovingly to someone else, but it is rare that we get a chance to do this in an environment where we feel reverence for ourselves and the world.

When you read poetry over music, it gives you the reader more confidence to slow down, leave space, and wring the truth out of every word. The way those words feel vibrating in your body, the way they feel in the air, the way the people in the room react to them, all of those sensations are part of the poem. Poetry is a living thing that needs to be let loose. We can never know it just from its domesticated form, watching it pace around in a cage.

The world can use more poets, precisely because it is a job that pays nothing. It aims to bring a heightened focus on true things. Come join Nick in learning how to be a poet.

Nick Jaina is an author and musician. His first book, the memoir Get It While You Can, was a finalist for the 2016 Oregon Book Award. He has released several albums, co-founded a ballet company, recording soundtracks for feature films and documentaries. He teaches writing workshops around the world that involve Tarot, meditation, theatrical movement, and, of course, love.

Dance Therapy/Healing Through Movement Practice and Creation with Sarah Brahim

Fall/Winter 2018 Workshop Series

Dance Therapy/Healing Through Movement Practice and Creation with Sarah Brahim

This workshop will help you discover deeper connection to your own body and the way you move, no matter your current level. We will explore dancing through memories and personal experiences working to continue intentional dance and movement relationships between our body and mind. We will also have fun and practice dancing to just feel good, release tension, and let go. There will be a creative portion of the class where we will (weather permitting) take movement therapy skills out into nature. We will also incorporate bodywork and massage to finish the workshop feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Sarah Brahim is a movement artist passionate about creating meaningful work with artists of varying mediums. She grew up studying, choreographing, performing, and teaching jazz, ballet, and tap in Portland, Oregon. She then studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance and in 2016 she graduated from London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS) and holds a BA Hons degree in contemporary dance. At LCDS she further explored the depth and resonance of movement, discovering her passion for improvisation, collaboration, choreographing, and healing through movement. In 2017 she graduated from Portland State University with a degree in Public Health specializing in Community Health Education. Returning to her roots, Sarah is currently crafting, choreographing, and performing live with local Portland artists and expanding her repertory as a tap dancer. She believes dance can be life changing, transformative, and a universal language to bring people together.

Arabesque Quilling: Bridging Cultures With Art
Oct 10 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Fall/Winter 2018 Workshop Series

Arabesque Quilling: Bridging Cultures With Art

with instructor Koloud ‘Kay’ Tarapolsi

Quilling is a Renaissance art form that uses strips of paper that are rolled to create designs. The paper was wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape that was glued and shaped by Catholic nuns. Now we have modern tools for you to try this pioneering art form. No experience needed as instructor will guide you in step by step instructions on creating a card, bibelot or party favor. All materials, including paper, tools, and glues are provided.

Instructor Koloud ‘Kay’ Tarapolsi is a Libyan American paper artist who has been teaching quilling for 10 years in the Pacific Northwest to children and adults. She studied African art as an undergraduate and moved to Washington to receive her Masters in International Studies, specializing in the Middle East. She enjoys using the quilling stripes in her arabesque art since the paper allows her the freedom to explore movement in calligraphy while other mediums she has tried, such as clay and wood, have been too restrictive.
