Workshop Series at The Sou’wester
Writing Your Conservative Relatives with Jenny Forrester
It’s a fairly universal experience to disagree with family members sometimes. But what if those disagreements are more like a epic gulfs of bafflement and horror? What if your family members are conservatives? What if they’re Republicans? What then?
Write the conservative members of your family into immortality by bringing your pen and paper to the Thanksgiving table. We’ll write scenes that have the immediacy of fiction steeped in the emotional depths of lived experience.
If you’ve dreamed of leaving a story for posterity to tell your whole truth long after you’re gone or if you’ve dreamed of publishing this story for the world, this class is for you. Maybe you feel compelled to write and see what comes of it—consider the possibilities later. Maybe your childhood home remains within your mind as a bright place or a painful place or a beautiful, long gone now place, but the conservativism or religious authoritarianism remains in your metaphors. Write it all. Maybe even find some peace with it.
Literary Memoir offers the opportunity for growth and expression that other types of writing don’t. It’s not just that we’re writing our life’s memories, it’s that we’re writing our resistance through artistic expression. It’s that we’re writing ourselves resilient. So, in this class we’ll talk about what makes memoir literary.
Jenny Forrester has been published in a number of print and online publications, including Seattle’s City Arts Magazine, Nailed Magazine, Hip Mama, The Literary Kitchen, Indiana Review, and Columbia Journal. Her work is included in the Listen to Your Mother anthology published by Putnam. She curates the Unchaste Readers Series. Her debut memoir was published recently (May, 2017) by Portland’s own, Hawthorne Books.

WEEKLY EVENT
Mindfulness Talk with Shanna Gillette
Shanna is a certified yoga teacher, ordained metaphysical counselor and empath. Her journey began as a small child inadvertently discovering deep meditation as an escape from abuse. Having always had an interest in the unseen and unexplained, she began having out of body experiences before learning to speak. Eventually she received a regents scholarship to ASU for religious studies. A series of intense life changing experiences including a serious car accident brought her to the first of several “awakenings,” beginning most notably in 2005. She now helps people through the shift in consciousness we are currently experiencing, assisting them along the path toward self-forgiveness and self-love – the greatest journey of all.
Truly exemplifying her favorite quote from Kahlil Gibran, “The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain,’ she adds, “The journey to wellness is a constantly evolving process where we learn to nurture body and mind beginning with the heart; To truly understand that the most important step to long-lasting good health and harmony isn’t necessarily about sweating our way to perfect abs or contorting our bodies into painful positions. It starts within. It’s about self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, and self-love. It’s about learning to accept and respect ourselves wherever we may be. Through the physicality of yoga, we tune into a deeper more expansive space beyond the trivial day to day. We learn that it’s ok to nurture ourselves and to ALLOW our spirits to be happy.”
Shanna received her yoga teacher’s certification at Bryan Kest’s world renowned studio in Santa Monica, CA. She attended Arizona State University for Religious Studies, and is currently studying at the University of Metaphysics Sedona. She is available for private yoga and counseling sessions and can be found at:

Workshop Series at The Sou’wester
Let’s Make a Sandwich with Tommy Habetz & Jason Cohen
Join Tommy Habetz, of Portland’s Bunk Sandwiches and Pizza Jerk, for an afternoon of sandwich philosophy, sandwich construction, and sandwich eating. Working in one of the Sou’wester kitchens with both fresh local ingredients and the sort of things that anyone might have handy in their own kitchen, we’ll learn how to make one Bunk classic, and also develop and write the recipe for a brand new sandwich of our own.
Hailing from the kitchens of Mario Batali and Bobby Flay, Tommy Habetz joined forces with Nick Wood in 2008 to start Bunk Sandwiches. Made with high-quality ingredients, Bunk sandwiches are creative and comforting, satisfying and delicious. Its signature sandwiches – such as the Pork Belly Cubano, the Meatball Parmiagiano Hero, and the Pulled Pork with Apple Cabbage Slaw – have garnered national media attention from the likes of The Food Network, Food & Wine Magazine, and Travel + Leisure. Bunk has since expanded to five locations in Portland (as well as outposts in the Moda Center and Providence Park). In November of 2015, Tommy also opened Pizza Jerk, a New Haven style pizza joint in the Cully neighborhood of Portland. Pizza Jerk was named one of Bon Appetit’s “Best New Restaurants of 2016.”
Jason Cohen is an author, journalist and food writer whose work has appeared in such publications as Portland Monthly, Eater, the New York Times, Texas Monthly, and Street Roots. He wrote the first chapter of his most recent book, This is The Noise That Keeps Me Awake (co-authored with the band Garbage) at the Sou’wester.

Workshop Series at The Sou’wester
Objects / Belongings: Writing and Drawing about Our STUFF with Kate Bingaman-Burt
In this workshop participants will be asked to bring in their own personal objects that are meaningful (or not so meaningful). Kate will encourage participants to think about their everyday objects in new and different ways. What stories can we share of ourselves through our objects? What stories do our objects tell of us? Participants will explore a variety of illustration techniques and writing/editing methods to produce drawings and short narratives about our relationships with each object, and will compile a collaborative publication of the days work. Along with thinking and making things about our stuff, we will also learn about small press publications, different illustration methods and writing techniques. No drawing or writing experience necessary!
Kate Bingaman-Burt is an illustrator and educator. Her work orbits around the objects in our lives: the things we buy, the things we discard, and the collectivity and social interaction that can arise from cycles of consumption. Via illustrations, daily documentation, publications, events, large-scale participatory projects, client work, and a full-time role as educator, Kate’s work invites a dialogue about contemporary forms of exchange. She is an Associate Professor in Graphic Design at Portland State University and sits on the boards of Design Week Portland and Independent Publishing Resource Center. This spring she opened her space Outlet which holds workshops, events and houses a zine library. Come say hi if you are in Portland!
COST: $15
