This workshop includes: an introduction to the classification of fungi, identification techniques for Reishi and Turkey Tail (including distinctions from common look-a likes), an overview of the medicinal constituents of each species and their histories in healing, conscious and sustainable wild harvesting skills, as well as medicine making techniques for tinctures, balms, and teas.

The forests of the Cascadian bioregion are rich with medicine, and there is never been a better time to discover and re-connect with these gifts of life and the grandeur of the natural world. In this workshop we will learn to identify specific trees, lichen, plants, and fungi that contain therapeutics beneficial for human health, learn how to responsibly harvest them, and make first aid products for home use. Participants will walk away with an overview of the ecology of healing with plant medicines, ID skills, and techniques for making wound sprays, liniments, and muscle balms.

In this special event we will come together in a cooperative effort to educate ourselves and make healthy plans for minimizing stress, living fuller and healthier, with endurance and spacious awareness. As a group we will come together and learn how to create personal refuges based in stress prevention and relaxation techniques. A general overview of stress and anxiety in human health will be met with yoga techniques, breathing methods, recommendations for natural therapeutics, creative outlets, mindfulness meditation, a discussion on diet, grounding techniques, and more. Participants will walk away with a toolbox of resources of personal empowerment, allowing them to improve mood health with understanding and confidence.

Come learn the art of healing with water and temperature applications! The uses of water in its various forms have been utilized as medicine in various cultures across the world, from the Chinese to the Greeks and Indigenous North Americans. This workshop includes a scientific overview of how water (as liquid, ice, and vapor) acts as a medicinal carrier of temperature, a group sauna and cold plunge, and discussion/practice of traditional folk remedies for home use. We will cover methods of reducing muscle pain, treating stress and insomnia, headaches, immune system enhancement and more.
$30 per person. Handouts included. Bring a bathing suit!

Winter Solstice Potluck, Bonfire & Sauna
Come celebrate this shortest day of the year, the change of seasons, and the return of the light that the Winter Solstice brings. Join us for a potluck in the lodge at 6pm, harvest vegetables and winter delights, with a bonfire celebration in our sauna garden after dinner.
As part of the sauna bonfire we will serve locally harvested wild herb hot tea as a special treat. Mention SOLSTICE for 20% off your stay at the Sou’wester. Includes entrance to all of the Solstice events and a warm-up sauna any time of the day.
Community members or those already in the area, please join us for the potluck and if you want to use the sauna it is only $6 per person or $10 per couple.
Winter Workshop Series
Prose Writing Workshop with Nick Jaina
DATE: Saturday January 21st

TITLE: Prose Writing with Nick Jaina
COST: $30
Nick Jaina is a musician and writer from Portland, Oregon. His new album Brutal Lives is out on Fluff & Gravy Records. It is available on Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp, and wherever digital albums are sold. There will be an album release performance at the Liquor Store in Portland on October 6th.
He is a co-founder and musical director of the Satellite Ballet and Collective in New York City. He has composed the music for three ballets and three contemporary dances with that group, featuring dancers from the New York City Ballet, Ten Hairy Legs, and Juilliard, performing at the Baryshnikov Center and the Joyce Theater. Their most recent performance was two sold-out shows at Brooklyn Academy of Music in May 2014. Of that show, the New York Times wrote, “[The] pure, pungent, earthy music for strings, piano, and percussion… was the most physically bracing part of the night.”
He released his first book, Get It While You Can, a work of non-fiction, through Perfect Day Publishing in January 2015. It was a finalist for the 2016 Oregon Book Awards.

Winter Workshop Series
Herbal Plant Walk and DIY Elderberry syrup and Herbal Vinegar with Lara Pacheco
DATE: Saturday February 4th
TIME: 10am-2pm
This workshop will involve a plant walk, elderberry syrup and fire cider demo as well as tasting the fruits of our labor. I’ll discuss the medicinal virtues of plants and medicine that help support our immune system during the cold and flu season. We can also break for lunch in between.
Lara Pacheco is a mamita, musician and clinical herbalist in Portland, OR and she runs her own business called Seed and Thistle Apothecary, which offers seed to medicine herbal preparations and educational programs for all ages with a bent on social justice. She is also co founding the Seasonal Wellness Clinic which is a popup clinic to serve the low income community in her neighborhood.
COST: $10-$20 sliding scale
BRING: sack lunch/snacks, pen and paper for notes, suitable gear for the outdoors this time of year
