COMMUNITY CLAY PLAY
At Ilwaco Artworks
Clay Play is a casual, beginner-friendly session where you can learn handbuilding skills to create a finished piece! Ages 10+ w/an adult or ages 14+. $35/person. Register for any four Clay Plays for $100.
August Clay Plays | 10a-1p:
- 8/4: Sake Sets- Pinch/coil-built simple pouring vessel/vase with wide belly and narrow neck. Set of 4-6 matching shot-glass sized vessels.
- 8/11: Incense Holders
- 8/17: “The Open Cube” / Five-walled objects – Slab built vases, catch-all’s, herb planters, seed starters, bonsai, wall vases, jewelry holders. Leather hard slab construction.
- 8/18: Wind Chimes
- 8/24: Soft Slab Impression Objects – Soft slabs rolled over local leaves/flora and slump formed over ready-made objects like cups, bowls, cans, etc.
- 8/25: Ilwaco Art Walk Drop-in (1-4p no rsvp necessary): Mono Print Tiles.
- 8/31: Soft Slab Cups

8/10 Raku Class: Obvara & Traditional Methods
8/10. $45. 10a-1p w/Hans Miles & Thandi Rosenbaum.
Option one: Pick up 2lbs of raku clay at the studio any time, build your pieces at home and then drop your work off at the studio to be bisqued by Aug 1st. Then, join us for the raku fire, August 10th, 10a-1p where we will glaze and fire your pieces and they will be ready to take home that day. Basic tools kits are also for sale in the studio.
Option two: Just join us on Aug 10th, 10a-1p and choose a pre-made and bisqued piece to be glazed and fired and taken home that day! Please select an option from the drop-down menu.

Surface Decoration Intensive (Mixed Level) 2-day workshop w/visiting artist, Courtney Murphy.
August 13, 3-6p & August 14, 3-6p. $115
In this class we will explore different surface decorations on greenware working with underglazes. Techniques covered will include sgraffito, carving, paper resist, and image transfers. We will use tiles to try out different techniques, before using these new techniques to create a finished piece.
Bio –
Courtney Murphy is a studio potter living and working in Missoula, Montana. She studied Ceramics at Oregon College of Art & Craft, graduating in 2004. In 2009 she came to Montana where she completed a two year artist-in-residence at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena. She fell in love with Montana, and after a short term residency at Red Lodge Clay Center, and a long term residency at the Clay Studio of Missoula, she decided to settle in Missoula where she recently finished building a home studio.
Her work has been shown nationally and internationally, and has been featured in books and magazines including American Craft, Pottery Making Illustrated, and Ceramics Monthly. In 2011 she was honored to be chosen as an emerging artist by Ceramics Monthly.

8/17 & 18: Refresher/Beginner Wheel Throwing
For the beginning or intermediate pottery enthusiast! (Folks with previous wheel experience welcome). Class includes the preparation of clay, the techniques of centering and throwing, texturing, trimming and glazing your work. Fee includes clay, glazing and firing.
Shipping available of finished work to visitors. $15 handling + shipping.
